
Job Summary
Reporting to and receiving limited supervision from the Director of Sports Medicine, the Associate Athletic Trainer independently performs the full range of clinical athletic training duties. These responsibilities include planning, organizing, and delivering daily athletic training services to student-athletes. The role also contributes to the development and organization of the sports medicine program and provides guidance, training, and direction to less experienced Athletic Trainers.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate athletic training programs and assist in program development, including coordinating training room operations.
- Provide work lead direction and training to Athletic Trainer I and newly hired athletic trainers.
- Prevent, recognize and assess athletic injuries. Implement preventive and rehabilitation programs to treat athletic injuries using the appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments.
- Develop and administer rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries, including assisting in scheduling and assigning students for therapy.
- Use a variety of therapeutic modalities including, but not limited to, heat, cold, light, sound, electricity and rehabilitation and exercise equipment, and apply bandages, tapes, and braces to prevent and treat injuries.
- Consult Head Athletic Trainer, physicians, and other health professionals on injuries and treatment plans and coordinate with the coaching staff.
- Inform coaching staff and other health professionals on the status of injuries and treatment plans.
- Advise student-athletes on how to prevent injuries and maintain their physical condition. Regularly evaluate their physical condition.
- Educate and counsel student-athletes and staff regarding conditioning, athletic training and rehabilitation.
- Assist coaches in designing conditioning programs to prevent injuries.
- Attend practices and athletic events and provide medical emergency coverage to student-athletes. Travel with sports teams to away games as needed.
- Coordinate drug prevention programs and applicable drug testing requirements for student-athletes.
- Maintain equipment and cleanliness of the athletic training facility.
- Maintain appropriate medical records of injuries, treatment plans and progress.
- Assist in maintaining insurance records and monitoring and verifying insurance billings.
- Provide support to the athletic training curriculum by providing clinical instruction to students enrolled in such classes.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training, including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment, and rehabilitation
- Thorough understanding of therapeutic modalities, including their physiological basis and practical application, as well as preventative treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage, and the effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment
- Knowledge of and adherence to rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) related to student-athlete training, sports medicine care, and health and safety
- Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards for handling bloodborne pathogens
- Advanced proficiency in maintaining medical records in compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards
- Ability to follow and manage insurance procedures
- Advanced proficiency in assessing injuries and determining severity
- Advanced proficiency in developing and implementing conditioning and rehabilitation programs, and managing and treating injuries
- Advanced proficiency in the use of therapeutic modalities, treatments, and rehabilitation equipment for injury prevention and care
- Ability to determine appropriate referrals to other healthcare professionals
- Ability to recognize life-threatening situations and administer appropriate emergency care
- Proficiency in using computer systems for medical documentation, insurance processing, and recordkeeping
- Ability to effectively manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build effective relationships with student-athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians, and other healthcare professionals
Required Qualifications
- Equivalent to bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities
- Possess and maintain BOC (Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer) certification
- Possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED (cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillation) for Professional Rescuer and first aid
- Equivalent to two (2) years of experience as a certified Athletic Trainer in a high school or college environment
License
A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.
Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in athletic training or related field of study
- Three (3) years of experience as a certified athletic trainer in a college or professional team setting

Classification: Athletic Trainer II
Anticipated Hiring Salary: $6,103/month (Step 12)
CSU Salary Range: $4,908/month - $7,150/month (Step 1 – Step 20)
