Job Summary

San José State University is the oldest public university on the West Coast and is known as Silicon Valley’s public university. Within one of the nation’s most transformative universities, SJSU’s Behavioral Intervention (BI) case management services foster opportunity by working in a holistic manner with students who are experiencing higher levels of distress, life challenges, and/or barriers, which could be interfering with their ability to be successful.

Under the direction of the Senior Case Manager, the BI Case Manager serves both the University and the individual student by providing a coordinated institutional response. The Behavioral Intervention Case Manager’s non-clinical role is to assess threats/risks to self and community, advocate for and assist. This role will work with students to provide them with or connect them to the appropriate resources, while considering what is best for them academically and personally. All non-clinical case managers have responsibilities in providing direct support, risk assessment, internal/external referrals, outreach/training/education, and assessment.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Behavioral Intervention Case managers address situations defined by the NABITA rubric as elevated to critical that may include a visible incident involving University or local law enforcement, student death, victim or perpetrator of crime, victim of on or off campus accident including other campus community members, victim of natural disaster, on campus injury, or students affected by campus events or other student conduct.
  • Services include but are not limited to:
  • Providing assessment, advocacy, resources and referrals as well as follow-up services for students that are experiencing significant physical, mental, psychological, and life management difficulties.
  • In this capacity, BI Case Managers work closely with key offices (University Housing Services, University Police, Counseling & Psychological Services, Faculty Affairs, Equal Opportunity and Employee Relations, Student Conduct and Ethical Development, University Personnel).
  • Duties include providing information and training for the campus community; fielding calls, emails, and responding to referrals regarding concerning behaviors; coordinating responses and services for individuals; maintaining the Behavioral Intervention Team database; undertaking research on national best practices; attending weekly meetings; and participating on other committees dealing with campus safety.
  • Support students struggling to function in the university system, those with current and emerging mental, psychological, or physical health issues, and students experiencing issues adjusting to academic and social life.
  • Coordinate services and provide referrals to the appropriate resources on campus including outside agencies and providers such as the Employee Assistance Program. The position also oversees a comprehensive program to identify and manage students, faculty and staff at risk.
  • Work towards minimizing the impact of mental illness or emotional distress on the safety, academic, and personal pursuits of students through effective referral and follow through.
  • Work in coordination with the Sr. Case Manager, University Police Department and other key members of the Threat Management Team in assessing risk using WAVR 21 and coordination of information of appropriate resources for cases deemed to be a higher level of concern for harm to others/the greater community.
  • Responds to these reports by quickly gathering information about the individual’s current mental health status, recent behavior, and any potential triggers. They conduct a non-clinical assessment of current mental state and any immediate risks the student may pose to themselves or others, including University Police and/or Counseling and Psychological Services as appropriate.
  • Attempt to connect with hospitalized students or authorized contacts to support academic
  • Seek to identify and intervene as early as possible with individuals whose behavior suggests the need for support services such as those struggling with complex mental, psychological, and physical health issues, learning disabilities, and safety concerns that are referred to the BIT.
  • Serve as a primary resource for managing assigned reports of behavioral concerns on campus as well as responding to inquiries and providing appropriate follow-up to reports.
  • They provide outreach and guidance during withdrawal, leave of absence, and reinstatement, especially for those facing personal emergencies or health issues.
  • Be readily accessible and provide consultations to students, faculty, staff, members who are concerned about an SJSU student in distress; or students related to case management functions.

  • Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by a student, student organizations, faculty, or staff and to analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions, and project consequences of various alternative courses of action
  • Knowledge of software applications: word processing, spreadsheet, and database management.
  • Ability to take calls/referrals as required which may include evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with campus employees and external agencies.
  • Thorough knowledge of, or ability to learn CSU policies and ability to apply that knowledge to individual situations.
  • Ability to interpret and explain policies to students & employees.
  • Ability to analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems.
  • General knowledge of University, procedures and practices related to student services and programs.
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from various groups.
  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job‑related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Higher Ed/College Student Personnel, Social Work or related field.
  • Three years of professional experience in a University setting and/or case management experience.
  • Experience demonstrating excellent counseling, communication, critical thinking, negotiation, and conflict management skills.
  • Experience working with a large diverse population in an urban setting.
  • Experience developing partnerships and collaborating with campus faculty and staff, and legal system.
  • Experience working with community resources to assist populations in need.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Experience with complex case management and community resources.
  • Bilingual communicator.

 

Compensation

Classification: Student Services Professional IV
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,320/month
CSU Salary Range: $6,320/month - $9,014/month
