Department Summary

The Lucas College and Graduate School of Business is an institution of opportunity that offers a high-value education with a global focus, innovative programs, and deep ties to Silicon Valley corporations and leaders. Our distinguished faculty provide relevant business education focusing on excellence in teaching and applied research and serving the needs of diverse students from the Silicon Valley and beyond. The college is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the California State Board of Education, and the prestigious AACSB International (www.aacsb.edu). Fewer than five percent of business programs worldwide have earned the AACSB’s certification of excellence.

The Lucas Graduate School of Business (Lucas GSB) offers four degrees and multiple graduate certificates. The MBA degree is offered through two programs (Early Career MBA or MBA for Professionals) depending on the students’ profile and chosen academic pace. The Early Career MBA program is open to students with limited work experience (0-5 years) and offers three distinct tracks: accelerated (12 months), full-time (21-24 months), and part-time (33-36 months).  The MBA for Professionals is a flexible part-time program suitable for working professionals with extensive experience (5+ years). The Lucas GSB also offers three specialized business degrees: Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA), Master of Science in Taxation (MST), Master of Science in Transportation Management (MSTM). The graduate certificates offered by the Lucas GSB can be completed as stand-alone programs or combined with the graduate degree.  The graduate certificates provide advanced educations in the fields of Accountancy, Business Analytics, Global Leadership, Taxation and Transportation Management.

MBA Program Summary

The MBA programs provides a strong foundation of business concepts, models, skills, and methods with which to face immediate and future managerial challenges. The programs aim at creating a general management (rather than a functional specialist) perspective. Pragmatic in approach, the focus is on problem analysis and synthesis, decision making, action taking throughout the functional areas of business, and understanding the international context of business. The MBA programs prepare students through a broad curriculum of functional core courses, cross-functional and integrative courses, and elective courses.

Although SJSU grants one unique MBA degree, the Lucas Graduate School of Business offers two distinct MBA programs that differ according to student profile, flexibility, degree completion time, admission cycle and cost. The Early Career MBA program is tailored to students who have fewer than five years of work experience. The MBA for Professionals is designed for working professionals with more than five years of work experience.

The Lucas College and Graduate School of Business of San José State University welcomes applications for part-time faculty appointments to teach courses in our Early Career MBA program and MBA for Professionals program, should an opening arise. MBA courses meet on evenings and weekends in a hybrid format. Sessions are 8-weeks long during the academic year and 5 or 10 weeks long during the summer term. Each course includes a mix of synchronous online classes and in-person classes on the university’s main campus in San José, California. A small number of Business Analytics electives are offered in an asynchronous online format.
