Job Summary

This role offers an exciting opportunity to serve as a strategic leader within the University Marketing and Communication Division that oversees strategy and integrated marketing campaigns at the intersection of marketing communications, digital experience, and data-driven decision-making. The Director will drive brand marketing campaigns, manage the university’s web and content strategy, and deliver actionable insights through comprehensive analytics—all in service of advancing SJSU’s institutional priorities and improving the user experience for SJSU audiences.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee multi-channel marketing campaigns that align with organizational goals and brand strategy.
  • Collaborate closely with UMC marketing team colleagues to align campaigns across priority areas: enrollment marketing, Schools/Colleges, and brand marketing.
  • Lead strategic planning for campaigns, including audience targeting, creative direction, and performance tracking.
  • Serve as a thought partner to internal stakeholders and external vendors to ensure cohesive content strategy, design, and execution.
  • Champion marketing communications that elevate the department’s visibility, impact, and alignment with university priorities.
  • Lead strategic projects and work closely with procurement on large-scale RFPs and vendor partnerships.
  • Supervise a multidisciplinary team of five web professionals specializing in UX design, front-end development, accessibility, content strategy, and governance.
  • Translate technical concepts into clear, audience-appropriate language for campus partners and leadership. Ensure all SJSU websites are user-centered, meet accessibility requirements, are optimized for SEO/GEO performance, and aligned with marketing goals.
  • Drive continuous improvement of the university’s web experience by integrating analytics, user feedback, and emerging best practices.
  • Set annual web priorities, project plans, and performance goals; manage timelines, budgets, and resources across concurrent initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and professional growth through coaching, mentorship, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Lead strategic content development efforts, ensuring messaging aligns with brand pillars and audience needs.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • In depth knowledge of different digital marketing channels
  • Strong knowledge and experience with online marketing tools and best practices
  • Hands-on experience with SEO, Google Analytics and CRM software
  • Basic knowledge of web design procedures

  • Familiarity with web design and various content management systems (e.g. Drupal, Omni Update Campus)
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and develop employees at varying levels, fostering accountability, collaboration, and professional growth
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to provide clear direction, constructive feedback, and transparent decision-making
  • Demonstrated skill in supervising multiple employees, including setting expectations, delegating work, and evaluating performance

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing or Business Marketing
  • A minimum of 8 years of progressive leadership experience in Marketing, Communications or Integrated Marketing Campaigns
  • Experience in higher education marketing
  • Experience with website management or website content strategy
  • Minimum of 4 years of staff management experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience overseeing web content strategy and/or working on websites

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or Business Marketing
  • Project Management Certifications or training (such as Lean Six Sigma, Agile, etc.)
  • Marketing awards or recognitions for integrated campaigns in higher education

 

Compensation

Classification: Administrator II
Anticipated Hiring Range: $11,667/month - $12,084/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,053/month - $16,221/month

The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
