Job Summary

The Geology Department in the College of Science offers a range of courses and degree programs that advance understanding of Earth’s composition, structure, and processes. Under general supervision, the Geology Support Technician provides comprehensive instructional and technical support for the department’s lecture, laboratory, research, and field activities. While primarily supporting the Geology Department, this position may also assist other departments within the College of Science as needed. Responsibilities include maintaining and repairing scientific equipment; managing the ordering, purchasing, and inventory of laboratory materials; training and assisting students and faculty in laboratory and field procedures; and ensuring compliance with environmental, chemical, and safety standards. The technician also contributes to the development of instructional materials, organization of geological collections and displays, and coordination of field activities.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional and technical support for lectures, laboratories, and faculty and student research activities
  • Maintain, repair, and coordinate service and calibration for scientific and technical equipment
  • Order, store, and manage laboratory materials, chemicals, and gases in compliance with safety regulations
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory operations
  • Provide safety training to faculty, staff, and students; ensure compliance with environmental, chemical, and radiation safety policies
  • Assist faculty in designing and implementing new instructional laboratory and field activities
  • Support the planning and logistics of field trips and the summer field program
  • Organize and maintain departmental collections and displays of rocks, minerals, maps, and fossils
  • Provide occasional technical support to other departments within the College of Science

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
  • Knowledge of the principles, theories and practices of the Geological Sciences
  • Knowledge of scientific and laboratory equipment and instruments used in Geology
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods related to performing university-level laboratory and technical equipment support services
  • Knowledge of the materials and supplies used in Geology, including various chemicals, their relation to the curriculum and their characteristics, as well as proper storage, handling, safety and disposal
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports
  • Working knowledge of software applications: word processing, spreadsheet, database management
  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies
  • Ability to work harmoniously with faculty members in carrying out the educational mission of the Department of Geology as well as the College of Science
  • Ability to maintain, operate, adjust and perform minor repairs on technical and scientific equipment related to Geology
  • Ability to direct the activities, instruct, and demonstrate laboratory safety procedures and equipment to students
  • Ability to appropriately and safely store, handle, and dispose of chemicals and other materials, and be committed to a high standard of safety
  • Ability to learn new scientific technologies and ways of using them to support the instructional process
  • Ability to apply knowledge and judgment when assisting faculty and students with evaluating kinds of qualities of materials and equipment

 

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to three (3) years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned. A combination of education and experience will be considered

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Geology
  • Experience working in an academic department in higher education

 

Compensation

Classification: Instructional Support Technician II
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,384/month - $5,713/month (Step 9 – Step 12)
CSU Salary Range: $4,595/month - $6,694/month (Step 1 – Step 20)

Additional Information

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
