Reporting to the Managing Director of the Jack Holland Student Success Center (JHSSC), the Academic Advisor will provide moderately complex, consistent and accurate student services support for the JHSSC with limited supervision in a high-volume and fast-paced work environment. Such services include: providing information and advising to current and prospective students through academic planning and successful paths to graduation, helping students find solutions for issues they may face, collaborating with relevant constituents to advocate for student needs, informing and referring students to relevant university services and resources, coordinating student success programs, events and projects of the JHSSC.
- Provide exceptional advising to students and ensure interactions are maintained at a professional level, responsible for entering advising notes after each advising session
- Provide moderately complex academic advising for students on their academic plans and pathways to graduation and how to access resources and services to help them address any issues and enhance students’ likelihood of success
- Provide information to students concerning Lucas College of Business Undergraduate Programs and degree requirements
- Advise students individually and in groups on topics such as; preparing and completing the change/declare a business degree criteria, graduation application procedures, graduation date change, general education requirements, developmental studies/remediation, and academic probation, disqualification and reinstatement
- Investigate and resolve moderately complex student issues using PeopleSoft/Campus Solutions and/or other advising systems. Issues may include online course registration, holds on students’ records, probationary holds, articulation issues, pre-requisites, etc
- Remain current with university policies, procedures, and frequently used forms from key student service areas (such as Registrar, Financial Aid, Bursars, Undergraduate Studies, etc.) and help students complete these petitions
- Provide coordination and implementation support for events, activities, workshops, special events, individual and group academic advising sessions and educational workshops
- Develop and participate in programs to highlight the LCoB and the JHSSC to the SJSU and local communities as well as feeder schools. This would include information sessions on the LCoB offerings and promotional activities and materials designed to highlight the unique programs of LCoB and its commitment to student success
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling.
- Standard office equipment (computers, copiers, phones) and standard office software packages, such as Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etc.) and related computer packages
- Student administration databases (CMS/PeopleSoft, Banner, etc.) and standard productivity tools
- Basic principles of individual and group behavior, and techniques and methods of interviewing students for the purposes of holistic academic advising
- Excellent verbal/written communication, presentation skills, and customer service skills;
- Strong organizational, problem-solving and interpersonal skills
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy with information, research, analysis, and reporting skills
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and faculty to function as part of a team
- Participate in university advising discussions, help with tools and reports to identify student needs and assess program effectiveness
- Available to work occasional evenings and weekends
- Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field
- Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
- Master’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Counseling, Student Affairs, or related area.
- Equivalent of 2 years progressively professional student services work experience.
- Experience working in an advising office/center, preferably a high volume and fast-paced work environment.
- Experience working with students, staff, faculty and administrators from a diverse background.
- Experience with university and college advising policies and procedures.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,691/month - $4,759/month
CSU Salary Range: $4,304/month - $6,120/month
