Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of Moss Landing Marine Labs (MLML), the Executive Assistant for the Administrative and Operations and all relevant committees, the MLML Facilities Supervisor is responsible for the preventive maintenance, construction and upkeep of all facilities, related equipment and vehicles at six different locations that comprise the MLML campus. Specifically, the incumbent is responsible for service, repair and inspection of heating, plumbing, high, low voltage and emergency electrical, mechanical, fire detection, air conditioning and sea water pumping systems and the mechanical, electrical systems and electronic controls associated with such systems in a centralized plant (Main Building) and in decentralized utilities centers throughout the Lab's properties. The Facilities Supervisor is also responsible for overseeing and completing major and minor construction projects at MLML including facility interior and exterior structures, materials and finishes as well as Group I and Group II equipment. In addition, the Facilities Supervisor is responsible for vehicle maintenance, custodial and landscaping upkeep throughout the laboratories and the oversight of the MLML machine shop facilities. The incumbent oversees the work of outside contractors and subcontractors, a custodial contracting group, facilities mechanics, student helpers and serves as the liaison between MLML and other campus facility groups.


Key Responsibilities

  • Must emulate safe work practices and insure these practices are followed by facility employees and shop users as described in the 11 PP, prescribed by OSHA and developed for specific practices
  • Must be on call 24/7/365 for emergencies
  • Responsibly and efficiently manages the Facilities budget insuring cost effective practices are followed
  • Advises the APRO, Director and faculty on planned campus expansion, construction and upgrades and completes all pre-construction research
  • Drafts plans, solicits and coordinates bids
  • Monitors facilities and equipment projects, including both major and minor construction projects and minor fabrication of equipment for laboratory and/or research use
  • Operates, maintains, repairs, and inspects HVAC equipment, refrigeration, water treatment, ventilating and seawater-related equipment (e.g. boilers, chillers, compressors, water pumps, air handlers, reverse osmosis/deionization systems, vacuum pumps, ducting, control valves, seawater pumping operations and electronic control systems related to this equipment)
  • Oversees and completes the maintenance of software for the implementation of a comprehensive preventative maintenance program consisting of logs of daily equipment operations, preventative maintenance and repair, work scheduled and completed, maintains records and schedules for maintenance (filter changes, lubrication, etc.)
  • Maintains keycard security system including operation and maintenance of MLML’s security system including maintaining comprehensive database for security clearances of MLML users
  • Oversees the performance of the vehicle maintenance program, directs the vehicle coordinator and authorizes vehicle maintenance and repair
  • Oversees and completes repairs to and not limited to bearings, shafts, seals, drive belts and electrical wiring and installs central system parts


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of Allen and Bradley RS View or similar SCADA type software systems and their use and operation within a life support seawater system
  • Ability to sketch, draft, read, interpret and work with blueprints, manuals, diagrams and operating procedures at a level sufficient to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job in a timely manner is required
  • Ability to learn and utilize State, Federal and local regulations and building codes pertaining to the facility operation is necessary
  • Ability to exercise safe working practices and emulate these practices to others; familiar with MSDS's, and SB198
  • General knowledge of the principles of effective supervision and the ability to plan and direct the work of work teams
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports
  • Must be able to successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses and pass the course exam
  • May be required to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to be on-call year-round for emergencies


Required Qualifications

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to seven years of journey-level experience in building system operations, maintenance, analysis, calibration and repair
  • One year of project coordination and a minimum of one year in a supervisory/lead capacity
  • This experience must include a minimum of four years of skilled journey-level work operating, diagnosing, repairing and maintaining large central plant systems
  • Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations



A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Google Suite (Gmail, Google calendars, Google Drive), MS Office
  • Experienced with basic budgeting principles
  • Construction/project planning and management work experience



Classification: Supervising Building Service Engineer
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,500/month - $7,500/month
CSU Hiring Range: $6,375/month - $8,080/month
