Job Summary

The Lurie College of Education at San José State University is seeking a visionary thought leader with a demonstrated commitment to educational justice to serve as the Founding Executive Director of our Institute for Emancipatory Education. Housed at SJSU with deep roots in the San José region, the Institute for Emancipatory Education (IEE) will become a nationally and internationally recognized center of excellence in emancipatory education. The Institute will facilitate community engaged research and advance emancipatory pedagogies in collaboration with diverse communities and P20 educational institutions in the San José and Silicon Valley educational ecosystem. Through publications, presentations, convenings, workshops, and advocacy, IEE leaders, faculty affiliates, students, and community partners will share learnings broadly with academics, researchers, policy makers, practitioners, and community leaders.  Across all components of this work, IEE will seek to create more equitable and inclusive educational systems that nurture the creativity and brilliance of all learners so that our diverse, democratic society can truly thrive.

IEE will serve as the host for SJSU’s role as a founding and regional anchor to REP4 (Rapid Educational Prototyping for Equity: Learners, Communities, Education, Together), a collective impact alliance shaped by hundreds of diverse and trained learner co-designers. Launched in 2019 by Grand Valley State University, the initiative expanded in 2020 to include six regional partners that represent a wide range of public higher education institutions all of which are committed to a set of shared values as we seek to re-imagine the future of post-secondary education.  These values include: putting learners at the center of our work, embedding equity in all our work, shaping and investing in action-oriented projects, strengthening cross-sector collaboration and building a platform to enable it, and building collective intelligence across the agency.  IEE will support this work by hosting regional summits, co-leading national convenings, engaging campus and regional partners in REP4-related initiatives, and representing SJSU in the national partnership. 

IEE’s Founding Executive Director (ED) will provide leadership for all aspects of the Institute’s work. The ED must work effectively with departments, faculty, staff, students, and community stakeholders to articulate, support and implement the Institute’s strategic vision and goals. The sustainability and growth of IEE and its strategic vision, are significant priorities for the college and the university, and have the full support of the Dean and university leadership. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing Institute operations, developing strategy, external relationships, collaborating with faculty, and executing research and contract agendas. The ED also manages all personnel, budgeting and management of funds, and provides annual reports to the Dean and university partners with the academic resource manager. As a key liaison with Advisory Boards and all internal and external stakeholders, the ED works collaboratively to develop research, programming, curriculum, messaging, and funding sources to further the goals of the Institute.

 

This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated expertise as a thought leader in education who is deeply committed to educational equity, racial justice, and inclusion throughout P20.
  • Demonstrated leadership in building and managing initiatives, organizations, and/or movements in collaboration with internal and external community partners.
  • Leadership experience working in partnership with Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, International, Neuro-atypical, LGBTQ+ and other minoritized students and communities. 
  • Exceptional communicator with strong interpersonal communication skills, appropriate for interacting with a diverse range of individuals, contexts, and formats.
  • Demonstrated success in grant writing and project management and skilled in effective fundraising.
  • Strong research and publishing record in areas related to the goals of the IEE.
  • Ability to, implement, and oversee effective budgeting, fiscal management, and personnel management.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the vision, mission, and goals of the University
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to equity, diversity, and social justice and an understanding of how to enact these values in policy and practice.
  • Ability to communicate, lead, facilitate and support a professional, ethical, transparent, collegial and inclusive environment working with multiple and diverse constituencies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and interact well with different university constituencies, including faculty, staff, administrators, students, and community partners.

 

Required Qualifications

  • A Doctorate in an education-related field or equivalent
  • Management experience
  • Grant and/or fundraising experience

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Doctorate in an education-related field
  • Demonstrated strong record of research, scholarly, and/or creative achievement that warrants tenure in an academic department at San José State University at the rank of full professor.
  • Strong leadership experience in academic settings
  • Experience running regional or national initiatives
  • Extensive grant and/or fundraising experience

 

Compensation

Classification: Administrator III
Hiring Range: Commensurate with experience
