Department Summary

The Computer Engineering Department at San José State University is a leading provider of engineering professionals to Silicon Valley’s high-tech industries. It provides its faculty with opportunities for close collaborative ties with industry and research partners in Silicon Valley. The department serves more than 2100 undergraduate and graduate students and offers BS and MS degrees in both computer and software engineering and MS degree in Artificial Intelligence. The Computer Engineering is a top ranked program in the nation among public institutions in its category by US News.

Students in Computer Engineering degree programs learn through our hands-on and practice-oriented curricula to prepare for professional careers in artificial intelligence, data science, embedded system, cyber security, big data, cloud technologies, virtualization, networking systems, system level design and verification, and emerging areas in computer and software engineering fields. They have opportunities to work with Computer Engineering faculty and industry sponsors to design, build and test computer and/or software systems in their capstone project experiences.

Brief Description of Duties

Lecturers are expected to teach their courses effectively, to work with the department Assessment Coordinator to assess course and program learning outcomes, to maintain appropriate office hours in accordance with University Policy, and to cooperate with the department in the peer-review process. Lecturers are strongly encouraged to seek guidance from the Department Chair for clarifications of University policies and department practices with respect to grading, testing, textbooks, office hours, course assessment, course learning objectives, accessibility accommodations, academic integrity, etc.

All Faculty should be organizing their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official LMS provided for the SJSU community. All classes at SJSU, whether online or not, must be anchored in the Canvas platform to ensure faculty-student connection in a common space as all students are directed to log in to Canvas for online access to their classes. You will have access to this system prior to the semester start date.

Candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

 

Required Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in computer engineering, software engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related degree relevant to the course assignment
  • Knowledge of the subject matter in the area assigned for teaching demonstrated through relevant professional experience
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated awareness of, and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population through cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. degree in computer engineering, software engineering, computer science, electrical engineering or a closely related field
  • Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work, if available.
  • Evidence of good industry experience and record of scholarly activities are desirable in order to teach advanced graduate classes in emerging areas

 

Conditional Appointment

Please be advised that an appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the order of work, or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.

 

Salary Range - To commensurate with experience.
