Major Duties
Under general supervision, the Lead Plumber provides work direction to a crew of skilled Plumbers and semi-skilled assistants involved in completing Student Housing plumbing work while performing the full range of skilled plumbing-related tasks for campus facilities and infrastructure. Is responsible for troubleshooting and the maintenance of automated plumbing systems, campus swimming pools, lab utilities, and fixtures for water, gas, oil, steam, sewage, fire sprinkler/prevention, and refrigeration plumbing systems. Performs work in accordance with all safety regulations and codes; instructs others in safety rules and ensures they are observed; accurately estimates costs, supplies, and materials needed for jobs; prepares lists of materials; ensures work is performed in sequence; maintains records; and prepares more complex reports.
- Provides lead work direction to a crew of skilled Plumbers and semi-skilled assistants involved in completing Student Housing plumbing work.
- Makes necessary repairs to domestic water supply systems, sewers, gas service, and utility equipment, as well as water closets and related devices; campus pool equipment, pumps, sprinklers, fire protection systems, and all related piping systems.
- Responds appropriately to emergencies; instructs others in safety rules and ensures safety regulations and codes are met and observed.
- Reads and works from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications, and estimates material and labor costs for standard work.
- Performs entries on the computer for time and material using the Star Rez, submits work orders, and maintains job records.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to those acquired through completion of a standard plumber’s apprenticeship program.
- One (1) to two (2) years of experience as a journey-level plumber that included work coordination responsibilities. Four (4) to five (5) years preferred
- Valid California Driver's License required.
- Must be able to lead, instruct and coordinate the work of a small group or crew of skilled and semi-skilled workers. Two (2) to three (3) years of lead work experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of plumbing systems, equipment, materials, and related infrastructure, including domestic water supply systems, sewers, gas service, utility equipment, fire protection systems, campus pool equipment, pumps, sprinklers, and associated piping systems, with the ability to perform skilled repairs, replacements, cleaning, and maintenance.
- Skill in performing a wide range of plumbing tasks, including repairs and replacements of disposals, faucets, sinks, washrooms, lavatories, and shower equipment, as well as assisting with the remodeling and installation of plumbing systems while maintaining sanitary sewer systems.
- Ability to read and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications; make rough sketches of installations; and estimate material and labor costs for standard work. Demonstrated skill in ordering and installing replacement components essential to service and maintenance requirements.
- Ability to provide work direction to skilled and semi-skilled personnel, respond effectively to emergencies, and apply safety regulations and codes in daily work activities. Skill in communicating, building utility system conditions, coordinating project work with other trades, and operating carts and motor vehicles across campus in support of assigned duties.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

- Classification: 6548 / Lead Plumber / 1
- The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $ 6705- $ 7551 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $6705 - $9768 per month.
- HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday. May be required to work after hours and on call as needed.
- This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
- The individual hired for this role will physically work on-campus in Northridge. This is not a telecommute position.
