Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director, Office of Belonging and Inclusion (OBI) this position will provide support and coordination that impacts the success of the Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi (APID) Resource Center and its culturally diverse students. In collaboration with campus entities, the Assistant Director will lead and coordinate the planning and development of programs designed specifically for students who identify as Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi (APID) descent, providing the general campus with the opportunity to increase its awareness of the APID community experience.

The Assistant Director leads innovative efforts to provide an integrated approach to identifying, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and practices directed toward improving APID student outreach and yield, academic success, leadership and professional development, inclusion and retention, and enrichment of the overall APID student experience. The Assistant Director will plan and implement social, cultural, and educational events; facilitate leadership development; and establish relationships with student organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and coordinates programs, services, and activities that promote student learning, development, and success - Develop and facilitate year-round programs, workshops and activities for students, faculty, and staff that address the needs of the APID community and provide understanding, awareness, and support of identity, social justice and inclusion.
  • Build relationships with students quickly to proactively work to improve student experience, engagement with coaching, and success.
  • Support campus outreach events that align with the mission of the OBI and the APID Resource Center. Work collaboratively with the Director and Fiscal Coordinator with fiscal monitoring and processes.
  • Provide guidance, organization, and oversight to the APID Resource Center.
  • Support other initiatives, programs, and operations of OBI.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

The candidate demonstrates a strong commitment to punctuality and preparedness, consistently reporting to work on time and ready to fulfill job responsibilities. They possess extensive experience in social media, event planning, and public presentations, particularly to prospective students and diverse audiences, including the APID population. Their background includes working effectively in multicultural university environments and engaging with individuals from varied socio-economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds. They have a solid understanding of CSU/CSULB admissions procedures, academic programs, and student services, and are adept at drafting professional correspondence and reports. With excellent oral and written communication skills, they handle inquiries across multiple channels and maintain composure under pressure. Their organizational and time management abilities are complemented by strong problem-solving skills and independent judgment. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe software, and database tools like Access and Excel, they produce a wide range of professional materials. The candidate excels in customer service, travel coordination, and office equipment operation, and fosters collaborative relationships with students, staff, and external partners. They are flexible with scheduling, including evenings and weekends, and consistently uphold university policies while contributing positively to team dynamics.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

• Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields and three years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

 • Master's degree in student development in higher education, ethnic/cultural studies, social work, counseling, or related field preferred.

  • Light work - Job involves some lifting of medium weight objects (10-20 pounds) and/or 10% - 20% of the job involves standing or walking.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $5,696 - $6,309 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,540 - $7,893 per month.

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
