Job Summary

Under immediate supervision of the Supervisor, Payroll Services, this position follows general instructions and well-defined procedures and practices to perform standardized payroll and personnel transactions for specific actions, categories of employee or campus departments. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Personnel/Payroll Information Management System (PIMS) Payroll Processing for Salaried and Hourly Employees: Under immediate supervision of the Payroll Supervisor and additional oversight by higher level payroll technicians, the Payroll Tech I will process payroll and related personnel documents using the State Controller's Office PIM/PIP payroll system.
  • Customer service to assist employees and departments - Tactfully and clearly explain basic procedures and policies to individuals and departments who have minimal knowledge of payroll and personnel related processes and procedures.
  • Back up counter during peak periods or as requested.
  • Payroll accounts receivables (AR) tracking - Research outstanding payroll and benefits accounts receivable and salary advance balances.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Detail-oriented and adaptable professional with experience in HR, payroll, finance, or administrative support. The ideal candidate can quickly learn new systems like PJMS and PeopleSoft HR, apply CSU policies accurately, and maintain error-free data entry. Strong analytical skills, including complex arithmetic, are essential, along with the ability to identify and resolve discrepancies in numerical records. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment, communicate clearly, and demonstrate excellent grammar and office skills. A team player and self-starter mindset is a must.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

Equivalent to one year of experience in preparing and processing payroll/personnel documents required.

Physical Summary

  • Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects. (10 pounds or less).

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $4,166 - $4,583 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $3,680 - $5,961 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
