Position Description

Job Summary

Reporting to Administration and Finance Division’s Associate Vice President for Financial Services and subsequently to the Director of Athletics; the primary function of this position is to provide strategic oversight, implementation, and management of the Cal Poly Athletics Department’s financial functions, procedures, and policies.  This position will provide administrative oversight to all business operations of the department.  The position is expected to maintain a focus on continuous procedural and policy improvement to ensure effectiveness and sound financial practice.  The Associate Athletics Director of Finance will serve as the lead liaison for  university Financial Services leadership while conducting regular strategic financial analysis to inform their advisement of the Athletics senior leadership team on strategies for financial well-being.

Department Summary

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics sponsors 22 sports at the NCAA Division I level, employing approximately 50 coaches, 25 staff and administrators, and serving approximately 500 student-athletes.  

Key Qualifications

  • Manage and administer all aspects of Cal Poly Athletics finance and business functions.
  • Responsible for directing strategic matters as they relate to budget management and control.
  • Create financial models to perform budget forecasting and complex financial analysis necessary for departmental decisions and strategic planning, including a variety of external revenue sources, both unrestricted and restricted, such as NCAA and Conference distributions, sponsorships, licensing, game guarantees, ticket sales and other event-related revenues, gift contributions, etc.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.

  • Five (5) years of related professional experience.

  • Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Salary and Benefits

The anticipated hiring range for this role is $130,000 - $175,000 annually. Note that the offer is calculated based on the background and relevant years of experience of the individual selected.

This position may be "Designated" under California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. This would require the filing of a Statement of Economic Interest on an annual basis and the completion of training within 6 months of assuming office and every 2 years thereafter.
