Position Description

    • Position Summary
    • Lead Custodian

      Full-time temporary position available on or after March 17, 2025 and ending on or before March 10, 2026 in Campus Recreation. Appointment will be made for one year from date of hire with the possibility of reappointment and/or becoming permanent based on budget, department needs, and job performance. 

      Under the general direction of the Director of Campus Recreation, the Campus Recreation Lead Custodian is responsible for performing a wide range of custodial duties and providing oversight for assigned campus areas. Responsibilities include general cleaning and custodial care of campus buildings, facilities, and adjacent areas, such as offices, classrooms, laboratories, auditoriums, gymnasiums, and outdoor spaces. The Lead Custodian also trains, supervises, and supports custodial staff, assigns and inspects work, maintains records, and coordinates custodial support for departmental events. Additional duties include identifying and reporting repair and supply needs, ordering materials, and ensuring the safe use of custodial equipment and techniques. Custodial staff may work independently or as part of a custodial team. 

    • Job Duties
    • Duties include but are not limited to:
      • Clean and maintain assigned areas (dusting, cleaning surfaces, removing trash and recyclables).
      • Clean and disinfect restrooms and replenish supplies.
      • Clean glass doors, windows, blinds, and furniture. 
      • Clean graffiti, furniture upholstery, light fixtures, and woodwork/metal surfaces. 
      • Polish woodwork and metal surfaces.
      • Sweep, dry/wet mop, strip, seal, wax, and polish floors. 
      • Spot and fully clean carpets. 
      • Operate and maintain powered floor cleaning equipment. 
      • Perform general housekeeping duties. 
      • Perform minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and furniture (e.g., oiling doors, tightening screws, replacing chair/table foots). 
      • Train and instruct custodial staff in duties, custodial practices, and safe equipment use. 
      • Assist custodial staff in performing duties and provide support during absences. 
      • Assign, review, and inspect the work of custodial staff (including completing inspection forms). 
      • Maintain employee time records and report absences. 
      • Provide input for employee evaluations. 
      • Coordinate custodial support for campus events. 
      • Identify and report equipment, supply, and repair needs. 
      • Identify and order necessary supplies and materials. 
      • Respond to custodial/cleaning emergencies. 
      • Gather and deliver recyclables to central aggregation areas. 
      • Replace lamps in light fixtures. 
      • Safeguard areas from unauthorized access by locking/unlocking doors and windows. 
      • Arrange and set up furniture, equipment, and related items. 
      • Report facility repair needs identified during rounds. 
      • Check fire extinguishers to ensure they are full. 
      • Participate in campus event setup and cleanup (e.g., moving bleachers). 
      • Load and unload cleaning supplies and materials. 
      • Operate motor vehicles (e.g., trucks or electric carts) to transport custodial equipment and materials. 
      • May be required to obtain additional training and/or certification as part of professional development, based on department and/or campus needs, to stay current with industry standards. 
      • The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this classification. 
      • At the direction of appropriate administrator, may provide support to other departments/areas within functional area/department as needed. 
      • Other duties as assigned.
    • Minimum Qualifications
    • Experience: Equivalent to one to two years of related custodial experience and providing on-the-job training and leadership to others. 
    • Preferred Qualifications

      • Prior experience working in a higher education or CSU property setting.
      • Four (4) years of related Custodial experience.
      • High school diploma.
      • Two (2) years prior experience providing lead and direction to others.
      • Prior experience in coordinating the setup and teardown of large tables, chairs, podiums, and specialized equipment for events.
    • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

      • Knowledge of the methods, chemicals, and equipment used in custodial work and of the safety and sanitation practices and measures; and effective lead/supervisory practices and techniques.
      • Ability to provide lead work direction, including training others in proper work methods and safety and providing feedback on work performance.
      • Ability to read and write English at a level appropriate to the duties of the position. 
      • Ability to use computers to track work orders and order supplies and materials. 
      • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety.
      • Ability to operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies applicable to the position.
      • Ability to use custodial Systems such as those used to track work orders and two-way radios for communication. 
      • Ability to observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required.
      • Ability to perform work involving regular physical activity.
      • Ability to establish, promote and maintain cooperative work relationships with others.
      • Ability to analyze situations and take appropriate action.
      • Ability to move up to 50 pounds if required by the position.
    • Special Conditions

      • Required to travel between Turlock and Stockton campuses and third-party agencies.
      • May be required to work weekends, evenings, graveyard shift and alternate work schedules as required to meet the diverse needs of the University.
      • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs on a consistent basis.
      • May be required the ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
      • Requires frequent walking on uneven surfaces and standing for the majority of shift being active.
      • Requires repetitive pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, reaching, lifting, carrying, twisting, hand grasping and fine finger manipulation.
      • Requires work on ladders, scaffolds, stages and multi-structured buildings.
      • Must be able to work indoors in fluctuating temperatures and outdoors in potentially extreme weather conditions.
    • License or Certifications

      • Must possess a valid California Driver's License.

    • Salary Range
    • Anticipated salary will be $$3,690 - $4,059 per month plus excellent paid benefits. Salary will depend on the qualifications of the successful finalist. (Full Lead Custodian range: $3,690 - $6,062 per month)
