Job Summary

The Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Success (ADR&FS) is responsible for facilitating and enhancing research, scholarly, and creative activity (RSCA) in the College of Social Sciences (CoSS) and for supporting the success of faculty in all areas of their academic assignment. Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean serves as a key member of the College leadership team, providing support and facilitating faculty and student RSCA; tenure-track and tenured faculty recruitment, retention, evaluation, and development; and development and implementation of strategic initiatives, grants, and interdisciplinary partnerships. The ADR&FS coordinates and carries out the College’s commitment to supporting faculty and student RSCA representing a diversity of disciplines and reflecting and responding to the diverse challenges and problems facing our local and global community. In all these areas, the ADR&FS realizes the College’s commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence through culturally sustaining and academically affirming approaches to engaging students and faculty. The College of Social Sciences is undergoing a strategic planning process and the ADR&FS will have the opportunity to meaningfully shape the college’s strategic research priorities with profound impacts on faculty and student success, and the profile of the College.

The Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Success serves as a key member of the College leadership team and is expected to work collaboratively with departments and programs across the university to support all aspects of faculty success in the College. The ADR&FS supports strategic planning and implements initiatives related to the mission and vision of the College and the University, including programs and projects with regional and national organizations. The ADR&FS helps ensure compliance with policies and procedures, research issues, analyzes institutional data, prepares reports, recommends policy or procedural changes, and handles confidential issues that arise in the college. The ADR&FS represents the Dean and serves in their capacity as needed and directed when the Dean is absent. The ADR&FS works with the Dean, Associate Dean of Academics (ADA) and Director of Resource Operations (DRO), and Dean’s office staff to support department chairs and faculty and ensure a positive, collegial, collaborative culture in the College.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership in supporting the development and implementation of faculty research agendas by guiding and supporting proposal preparation, publishing, student mentoring, and community engagement
  • Coordinates and support research funding in the College
  • Provides oversight and management of research facilities
  • Assists with strategic planning and provides leadership for college-wide initiatives and university/community collaborative projects aligned with the College’s mission and vision
  • Identifies opportunities and supports initiatives, facilitates interdisciplinary research and scholarship, and supports faculty participation in public-facing and extramural engagement opportunities
  • Supports the Dean to increase funding and opportunities for innovation, interdisciplinary, and collaboration in research, scholarship, and creative activities, and develops and implements programming to support inclusive excellence and collaboration with the surrounding community

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Expert knowledge in the planning, implementing, and sustaining of comprehensive research programs
  • Proven track record in generating extramural grant or foundation dollars with experience garnering resources from either federal, state, or private entities
  • Ability to create and implement policies and develop resources that promote and enhance the research activities and faculty and student success
  • Ability to develop strategies for allocation of resources, management, and support structures to deliver the College’s research strategies and policies
  • Ability to ensure that the College’s research priorities are effectively and efficiently implemented
  • Ability to lead college-wide efforts around research-related faculty development and mentoring programs
  • Ability to build relationships and contacts both internally and externally
  • Ability to develop and implement effective strategies to support all areas of faculty development
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills, especially in understanding and communicating the needs of the College of Social Sciences
  • Superior analytical skills and ability to communicate evaluative information and recommendations
  • Ability to work independently and effectively across organization lines and in collaboration with a variety of individuals and groups
  • Demonstrated organizational awareness and ability to stay current on administrative policies, procedures, and business practices
  • Skilled in accommodating and prioritizing multiple demands for commitment of time, energy, and resources to meet College and Division priorities and timelines
  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner

 

Required Qualifications

  • Outstanding academic credentials commensurate with a faculty appointment in one of the College’s twelve academic units at the rank of Professor with tenure
  • Track record of funded grants, contracts, or foundation awards, with particular success in securing external funding from agencies, such as the NIH, NSF, or NEH or from competitive private entities, such as the Carnegie, Ford, or Rockefeller Foundations
  • Demonstrated record of a funded research program characterized by external funding and peer-reviewed publications
  • Strong administrative experience, signifying the ability to develop, communicate, and implement a strategic and focused vision about research
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion demonstrated by intention, active planning, focus of research, and/or accountability for diversity outcomes
  • Experience mentoring and supporting faculty development
  • Experience working on interdisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated understanding and support of a broad range of quantitative, qualitative and critical research pedagogies and methods
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of experience in department or college-level academic leadership (i.e., department chair, center director)
  • Demonstrated success in mentoring and developing faculty members’ scholarly productivity
  • Experience in building and supporting interdisciplinary research teams
  • Interpersonal qualities that will facilitate open and collaborative relationships among researchers across the College and University communities and with external constituencies
  • Sophisticated, strategic leadership skills to develop, implement, and measure the outcomes of strategies and programs
  • Knowledgeable about research best practices and student engagement in research as a high-impact practice

 

Compensation

Classification: Administrator III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $13,354/month - $14,000/month
CSU Salary Range: $6,250/month - $20,063/month

The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.
