Job Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Development, the Associate Director of Teaching and Learning develops, organizes and delivers professional development programming for faculty in support of student success in the Center of Faculty Development. The Associate Director collaborates with other campus units, including the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the Office of Undergraduate Education and units in Student Affairs, among others. Organizationally located within the Office for Faculty Success, SJSU’s Center for Faculty Development (CFD) cultivates excellence in all aspects of a faculty member’s assignment, including support for tenure and promotion, range elevation, sabbatical leave and other personnel processes; equitable, inclusive, accessible and effective teaching for student success; research, scholarship and creative activity; and leadership development. CFD also includes eCampus, which supports faculty in equitable and effective use of a broad slate of educational technologies, including the campus learning management system. The Associate Director collaborates with the Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Development and eCampus Senior Director to create programming for faculty excellence in teaching and learning that is equity-minded, inclusive, accessible, and multi-modal.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Program high-level, coordinated initiatives and campaigns (e.g., faculty learning communities), as well as individual workshops and events.
  • Provide multi-model training, including individual consultation, group sessions (workshops, learning community sessions) and self-guided engagements (online tutorials and/or website content).
  • Research and provide support to faculty toward the adoption of pedagogical strategies that promote student success in and across different instructional modalities (e.g., onsite, online, hybrid, co-synchronous).
  • Provide leadership and support for campus and unit initiatives and programs that support faculty in culturally relevant and inclusive pedagogy, collaborating with colleagues in ODEI and Student Affairs as appropriate.
  • Provide leadership and support for campus and unit initiatives, programs, and tools that support faculty in applying Universal Design for Learning principles for accessibility.
  • Connect and collaborate with unit staff on creative and design-based projects
  • Serve as a member of SJSU’s ATI Accessible Instructional Materials Committee.
  • Assist the Assistant Vice Provost on duties as assigned, such as planning campus or system-wide symposia, data analysis, report generation, and publication.
  • Communicate consistently and effectively with faculty through social media collateral and campaigns, website resources, and strategic use of email.
  • Manage proactive organization, review, and revision of CFD and eCampus digital programming assets (e.g., websites, Canvas course materials, video recordings). 

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to write/create training and professional development curriculum that is timely and reflects current and relevant research and practices in culturally-inclusive and accessible higher education pedagogy
  • Working knowledge of extant research in high impact practices in higher education, including the role of HIPs in student success for adult learners, first-generation students and historically underserved students
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with faculty and staff across disciplines and responsibilities, in face-to-face large group and individual settings, as well as mediated modes, such as email, Zoom, phone
  • Strong working knowledge of inclusive classroom pedagogy and principles of universal design for learning (UDL)
  • General awareness of faculty members’ RSCA (Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity) expectations
  • Ability to produce clear, professional and accessible slides and other presentational media
  • Ability to provide culturally sensitive feedback on faculty members’ instructional materials
  • Strong working knowledge of effective skills and tools for collaboration, including conflict resolution, and ability to work with colleagues from other units and offices around campus on shared programming and initiatives
  • Excellent customer service and public relations skills
  • Strong working knowledge of online tools used to support faculty development, including, but not limited to: Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Ability to apply consultative skills to determine professional development needs
  • Knowledge of and ability to master use of social media tools (such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) to communicate with faculty
  • Ability to meaningfully organize and use cloud storage solutions. Ability to create professional development curricula that is timely and reflects current and relevant research and practices in culturally-inclusive and accessible higher education pedagogy

 

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree
  • Minimum 2 years of higher educational instructional experience
  • Experience designing, implementing, and assessing high-impact pedagogical practices
  • Command of evidence-based best practices for inclusive and accessible pedagogy

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D./Ed.D.
  • Multi-modal (face-to-face, hybrid and online) instructional and/or professional development experience
  • Experience providing professional development activities or programming for faculty
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in supporting diverse learners

 

Compensation

Classification: Administrator II
Hiring Range: Commensurate with experience

Additional Information

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
