Job Summary

Reporting to the Chair of Biological Sciences or Designee, and also receiving work direction from the Microbiology Instructional Support Technician Lead, this technician works with little to no supervision to achieve specific outcomes. The primary purpose of the Organismal Biology Instructional Support Technician III is to ensure that all resources needed for class instruction are provided appropriately and on time. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, integral involvement in ongoing course development and planning, acquisition of needed materials, preparation of instructional specimens, physical set-up of teaching labs, and subsequent class success evaluations. This technician is also responsible for the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of departmental equipment, including audio-visual equipment and the LCD projector checkout system. Routine duties include purchasing materials, lab clean-up, routine maintenance and calibration of lab equipment, curation of museum and teaching collections, repair/replacement of biological models and equipment, organization of teaching areas, inventory and maintenance of specialized materials, and keeping detailed records of specimens and materials on hand. This technician is responsible for the Organismal Biology Service Center which provides live invertebrate animal specimens for class support and research across many curriculum disciplines within the biology department, including general biology, entomology, zoology, and botany. Animal care needs may require working after hours as needed.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Procure material needs for labs either through fabrication, purchase, or field collection
  • General upkeep, calibration, and repair of scientific equipment and measuring devices
  • Collaborate with lead faculty to optimally meet the needs of each assigned class
  • Research, revise, and update laboratory displays through the use of graphics, models, taxonomic keys, and use of specimens
  • Stock and maintain (inventory and purchase) supplies for courses and as needed by the department
  • Work with vendors and lead faculty to determine the most cost-effective options available, and manage purchasing transactions in accordance with the standards of the Purchasing Department
  • Oversee and maintain teaching collection and associated databases
  • Create and post classroom schedules for assigned classes at the start of each semester

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of the general methods, procedures, and practices used in biology laboratories
  • Thorough knowledge of animal classification, as well as human anatomy & physiology
  • Strong communication skills as well as excellent customer service and public relations skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees, students, and external agencies
  • Knowledge of animal developmental growth to provide properly suited specimens to laboratories
  • The ability to drive a car for field collection activities and purchasing from local vendors. Must be able to successfully complete the Defensive Driver Fundamentals classes, and possess and maintain a valid driver license
  • Working knowledge of computers, microscopes, and A/V equipment
  • Ability to operate and repair technical and scientific equipment
  • Ability to keep and maintain accurate financial records
  • Ability to work with potentially hazardous chemicals and a diverse assemblage of vertebrate and invertebrate animals

 

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to four years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned. A combination of education and experience will be considered

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Biology or a related field

 

Compensation

Classification: Instructional Support Technician III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,941/month - $6,018/month
CSU Salary Range: $4,283/month - $7,430/month

Additional Information

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. SJSU will issue a contingent offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
