Position Description

The Department of Chemistry at San José State University invites applications for a tenure track position in organic chemistry. Excellence in research and teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level is expected. The candidate will be teaching courses, including laboratory courses, in organic chemistry (Chem 8, 9, 112A/B, 113A/B, 114 and graduate courses). Some teaching in other areas such as general and/or introductory chemistry may be required. The candidate must be able to adapt their teaching methods to a variety of learning environments, including online instruction. The successful candidate will develop a robust research program engaging undergraduate and graduate (M.S.) students

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in organic chemistry or equivalent doctoral work. Alternatively, a Ph.D. in chemical education with a focus in organic chemistry research and significant experience working in an organic lab.  
  • Research in organic chemistry or in an area that interfaces with organic chemistry including educational research. 
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching in organic chemistry.
  • Postdoctoral experience in organic chemistry or in organic chemistry educational research is preferred.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate research students. 

Key Responsibilities

  • The candidate will teach courses, including laboratory courses, in organic chemistry (Chem 8, 9, 112A/B, 113A/B, 114 and graduate courses). Some teaching in general and/or introductory chemistry may be required.
  • The candidate must develop a research program that incorporates undergraduate and MS students
  • The candidate must submit grants and peer reviewed research publications.
  • The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
  • The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
