The Department of World Languages and Literatures at San José State University seeks a specialist focusing on the theories, practice, and teaching of Spanish-English Translation and/or Interpreting. We especially welcome applications from scholars with experience in translation and/or interpretation in one or more of the following areas: healthcare, education, law, technology/localization and entertainment/media. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in translation studies and/or interpreting, create appropriate new courses, demonstrate willingness to explore the development of interdisciplinary programs, establish strong ties with the local community, and contribute to and participate in the life and the development of the department.

- Ph.D. in Hispanic Literature, Linguistics, Translation Studies or related fields.
- Native-level fluency in Spanish and English.
- Experience and or expertise in teaching translation/interpretation.
- Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:
- Experience in translation and/or interpretation as it applies to one or more of the following areas: healthcare, education, law, technology/localization and entertainment/media.
- Experience in curriculum development, program building including student recruitment.
- Experience with CAT tools (i.e., translation and multilingual technologies) and the Digital Humanities.
- Knowledge of another language in addition to English and Spanish.
- Teach Spanish undergraduate and graduate courses in translation and/or interpretation, as well as other subjects as appropriate.
- Collaborate in the creation and development courses and programs in translation/interpretation.
- Academic assignment will include advising and recruitment of students and appropriate committee work. A strong record of scholarly publications in the candidate’s discipline is necessary for tenure and promotion.
- The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
- The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
